Joshua

My name is Joshua. I am 11 years old, from Fredericksburg, Virginia. I want to THANK YOU for the donations that provided the scholarship for me to attend Kappa Kamp.
Let me tell you about my experience…
When my Uncle Ed first told my mom about Kappa Kamp, I was really hesitant because I did not want to go to a camp I did not know about. However, after reviewing 2013’s schedule with my uncle, I thought it would be a good experience.
Before we left for the airport, we found out my direct flight was cancelled. Now I had to take a connecting flight to Houston through Atlanta. Though I was nervous about flying on a plane totally by myself for the first time, I arrived safely with no problems.
I was in the Bowtie Group. In the first week, we learned how to write a business plan. I experienced dorm life for the first time. I learned how to build a robot, manage money, tie a bowtie and a tie, and much more. We competed in sports like basketball and soccer and I learned how to play flag football. I heard about job opportunities in architecture, aviation, finance, law enforcement, the military, firefighting and teaching. At Kappa Kamp, I did things other kids do not do. So the opportunity meant a lot to me. I learned a lifetime of knowledge that will do me good in the future.
On Team Bowtie our business plan was the Chiropack. Our mission is to heal back pain on the go. The Chiropack is a backpack that vibrates and massages your muscles. It has many pockets and a built in charger. It also has wheels and a grip like a suitcase. The group had not all agreed on this idea at first but in the end we agreed and did a good presentation. We priced it at $350 with the desire to have an $120,000 annual profit after we pay all expenses (materials, marketing, rent, electricity, machinery, employees, etc.)
My dorm experience was awesome for a first time. The bed was comfortable and I had my own closet and drawers. My roommates and I came from different states. I was from Virginia, one from Tennessee and one from Chicago. Their names were Cameron Evans and Caleb Brown. I made friends with my roommate Cameron, and my team members Joshua Lynn, Zavier Benson, Wesley Lowe and Chris Neely.
My favorite activity was when I built a robot because robotics is a career I would love. The robot I built has a battery for a heart and a motor for a brain. It has tape for skin to hold it together and four paperclips for legs.
My favorite field trip was when we went to the AT&T Dallas Cowboys football stadium because we went on the field and into the locker rooms. Most people only ever sit in the stands. My favorite time of the week was Friday to Sunday because we were able to use our phones to call family, play games, read, and sleep longer.
What inspired me most were the speakers for the aviation and military careers and the number of other career options available to me. I heard them say if I keep myself out of trouble, keep getting good grades, am not fearful and maintain the attitude that it is cool to be smart, I will have many options.
I would love to participate in Kappa Kamp again because I know what to expect. I can’t wait for next year.
Because of your donation I had this great experience, and I thank you. Your money was well spent because it was a great learning experience for my development as a young man and I will share my knowledge with my little brother and my friends, Dequan and Isaiah.
Sincerely,
Joshua

Donnie

Mr. Ed,
Before I start, I want to say thank you for this opportunity. Hi, my name is Donnie and I’m from Mechanicsville, Virginia. I with live my father and my brother, unfortunately my mother is recently deceased. We miss her and we’re just getting use to life without her.
I am very social and sports-minded. I’ve been told I’m pretty funny. Lately, in school we have been learning about the Holocaust. I have decided to read the book “Izzy’s Fire” about the Holocaust. Last year, as a 6th grader I thought it would be a good idea to take the elective Spanish. Spanish is a high school course. Rarely any other 6th graders do that. I chose to resume Spanish and take it for a consecutive year.
Attending Kappa Kamp will improve my leadership skills. For my school, I was chosen to be on the leadership team. There are 16 students from each grade level and about 1,200 students at the school. Inside the leadership team, there is a group of four 7th graders and four 8th graders called the Prejudice Awareness Summit. I was chosen as one of the 7th graders for my leadership qualities. Inside of our group, we look at the bullying in our school to figure out solutions in order to stop bullying in the Chickahominy Community.
An investment in me is an investment in the future.
Thank you again and I look forward to participating.

Tyler

Mr. Ed,
My name is Tyler and I am a seventh grader at Woodcreek Middle School in Houston, Texas. I like skateboarding, going outside, drawing, playing video games in my free time, and going outside to play sports with my friends. This year I played on an AAU basketball team called the Franchise All-stars. My favorite subject is Texas History because I get to learn about the past and see the impact it had on the future. The last book I read was called Black History it talked about what African-Americans had to go through with slavery and segregation.
I want to attend Kappa Kamp to learn about managing my money and starting a business. After high school, I want to get an academic scholarship to Texas A&M University and get a degree in engineering, because I want to become an engineer when I grow up. I don’t want to be a pro athlete I just want to be an engineer. I just want to get a good education and I want to know how to spend my money wisely and I need something to fall back on if it does not work out. In the end, I just want my family to be very proud of me, the decisions I make and what I choose to do. When I am successful I will know that I did the work it took to get there and being a part of Kappa Kamp will start me on the road to success.
I am a great choice for a Kappa Kamp scholarship because I will work hard and I will make the right decisions while at camp. My goal is to go to college and get a great education I want to get on the right path to success. I want to see the opportunities the Kappa Kamp will provide me with but, I know that I have to work hard there and in life in general. My goal in Kappa Kamp is to work hard, experience college life through living in a college dorm for two weeks, make friends, have fun, listen to the instructor’s and what members of the organization are trying to help me with. Your money helping me to attend will be well spent.
Thank you for the opportunity.

Kameron

Hi my name is Kameron.
I am an honor roll 6th grade student at Tapp Middle School in Powder Springs, Georgia. I like to play basketball and I enjoy serving my community. In fifth grade I joined art club. We painted a restaurant’s windows for the holiday season. This year in sixth grade I joined an organization at my school called Men of Tapp. It’s a three year program that lasts our middle school career. It helps build you into a leader. Also every other Saturday we go to a community event to serve free food for less fortunate people. My favorite subjects in school are math and social studies. The last book I read was “Schooled” by Paul Langan. Usually the types of movies I like to see are comedy, documentaries, and action movies. The sport I play is basketball and I also look forward to starting track & field. My career choice I have chosen is to be an accountant. I would like to be an accountant because I can use my great math skills and handle my own money. These are just a few interesting facts about me, Kameron Conley.
I want to go to Kappa Kamp to spend part of my summer enhancing my leadership skills. This camp will give me an opportunity to stay active during the summer. The one time I’ve stayed away from home for a camp was May 2013. May 2013, my fifth grade class took a three day trip to Tybee Island, Georgia on the coast of Georgia. We slept in bunk houses and 91 kids from my school went. I guess that qualifies for staying in a dorm with about 100 other kids. At this camp I’m looking forward to meeting new friends and people. I’m also looking forward learning new things and developing my leadership ability. The final thing I’m looking forward to is fellowshipping with other young people like me. Those are the things I want to get out of Kappa Kamp.
I am a great candidate for the HELP scholarship because I am independent and very intelligent. HELP sponsors should invest time and money in me because I will cooperate with the rules & policies and use my time wisely at the camp. I’m not going to be the kid who is going to sit around and text my friends at home. I’m going to use the time to get to know the leaders and campers around me. I’ll participate in our activities and try my best no matter how hard it is. Reflecting on this essay I know I’m a great candidate for the HELP scholarship and Kappa Kamp.
